PortfolioSense Of Place Off Lanzarote's coastline sits a small island called La Graciosa. This small island had no roads, one cafe, shop and a small bar/restaurant. it was very peaceful, complimenting its name.
However, there was evidence of building new villas and holiday homes and they were re-constructing the small dock, making it larger so more boats could gain access to the land and change. This was quite a sad site and the evident anti-tourism graffiti gave the impression that there was anger among the locals although there may be good intentions, it felt like A calm before the storm. Object and FormObject and form was a studio based module that we were set in the first year. For this I had great trouble thinking of a subject as most of my work that I had done until that point was mostly landscape or street. So really the project for me was more about technique and tonal quality in the image. At first I photographed in colour, which gave too much of a commercial feel I felt and the bold colours of the flowers over took the form and detail of the flowers, so I switched to black and white, making a small sense of romanticism with the flowers and their natural form.
Personal Philosophies - Borders and Boundaries I immediately was drawn to street photography. I wanted to photograph in a city, as being from a small town, I felt cities were claustrophobic and I took my images in London. I wanted to project the sense of boundaries surrounding you and the crammed space and neglect. I researched other people's images of London and they all seemed grey or bold in one colour, or black and white. In my sequence I wanted to give a sense of this atmosphere but I don't think there's a strong relation in the images apart from structure. Perhaps if taken in black and white film there maybe a stronger atmospheric aesthetic behind the images. Being a very busy city, It was quite hard to have photographs with minimum amount of people, as i felt that would take the concentration to the person rather than the surroundings.
Negotiated Contemporary Practice - Night-timeThe vast darkness can give an innate search for light to give comfort. It can leave questions of reality and what you can see or not. It can ask what or who is there or was there. Darkness is commonly associated with fear, haunt and danger. Yet curiosity and intrigue can bring you to look closer in the dark surroundings and explore an odd sense or a life that is only revealed by night, and the sense of personal fear or uncertainty when alone in total darkness. The imagination can play games.
SanctuaryThere’s a decline in what is a memory in most childhoods – a ‘safe place’, ‘hide-out’ or ‘den’. These spaces just have the environment around it and little within it. The change in society, a predator fear keeps the young generation indoors under surveillance; the sacred memories of our youth are over-crowded. The escape from reality offered gave a sense of independence allowing us to experience, grow and understand. These special places reflect freedom, carelessness and an element of danger that taught us to be fearless, curious and take risks. This deprivation is not only affecting the children physically but psychologically too. It leads to social problems, isolation, self-expression and the ability to act independently and even how to survive the world. The exploration showed a constant in age difference and environment. Some spaces were open yet secluded in a rural setting, reflecting innocence, mystery curiosity and innate adventure desired. Others were closed off areas, less desirable to the eye featuring broken furniture evidencing just a safe haven away. The common truth in these spaces is that they served the same importance despite variety. They were all sanctuary and an important part of our personal understanding and development through memory and freedom. |
